VIENNA | CYBERNUSANTARA1.ID — The Indonesian Dispute Board (Dewan Sengketa Indonesia/DSI) is set to undertake a high-level international mission to Central and Eastern Europe, covering Austria, Slovenia, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary, and Croatia, from 1–15 February 2026.
The mission represents a strategic step in advancing Indonesia’s legal diplomacy, strengthening its role in the global arbitration ecosystem, and reinforcing investor confidence through credible and internationally aligned dispute resolution mechanisms.
As part of the mission’s early agenda, DSI will hold a strategic meeting with Ms. Judith Knieper, Head of the Legal Division of UNCITRAL (United Nations Commission on International Trade Law), on Monday, 2 February 2026, at the UNCITRAL Headquarters in Vienna, Austria.

The meeting underscores Indonesia’s growing engagement with global rule-making institutions that shape international commercial law and cross-border dispute resolution standards.
The visit is designed to deepen institutional dialogue, promote harmonization of arbitration norms, and position Indonesia as a reliable legal partner for international trade and investment, particularly amid increasing global economic interconnectedness.
Statements from Prof. Sabela Gayo, President of the Indonesian Dispute Board (DSI)
Prof. Sabela Gayo emphasized that the international mission reflects Indonesia’s proactive approach in strengthening the rule of law through constructive engagement with global legal institutions. According to her, effective arbitration systems are no longer optional but essential pillars for sustaining investor confidence and economic resilience.
She noted that collaboration with UNCITRAL represents a strategic opportunity for Indonesia to align its dispute resolution framework with globally recognized legal instruments, particularly in international trade law and arbitration. This alignment, she said, is crucial to ensuring predictability and fairness for cross-border commercial actors.
Prof. Gayo further highlighted that Central and Eastern Europe offer valuable insights into institutional independence, arbitrator professionalism, and procedural efficiency. DSI aims to learn from these experiences while contributing Indonesia’s perspective as a leading emerging economy with a rapidly evolving legal infrastructure.
Addressing the meeting with Ms. Judith Knieper, Prof. Gayo underlined the importance of dialogue on UNCITRAL Model Laws, international arbitration reform, and best practices in dispute resolution governance. She stressed that such discussions help ensure national arbitration systems remain responsive to global economic realities.
Concluding her remarks, Prof. Gayo expressed optimism that the mission would lay the groundwork for long-term cooperation, reinforcing Indonesia’s position as a trusted arbitration-friendly jurisdiction and a strategic hub for alternative dispute resolution in Asia.
